Smith Rock State Park

If you enjoy scenic views of deep river canyons or rock climbing, Smith Rock State Park is the place for you. Smith Rock is located in central Oregon's high desert near the towns of Redmond, Terrebonne and Bend. Its sheer cliffs of tuff and basalt are ideal for rock climbing of all difficulty levels. There are several thousand climbs in the park, more than a thousand are bolted routes.
Smith Rock also offers miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, featuring the meandering Crooked River and views of the volcanic peaks of Oregon's Cascade Range. Along your trip through the canyon, you might see golden eagles, prairie falcons, mule deer, river otter and beaver.

Much of the 1994 film adaptation of the 1976 book Even Cowgirls Get The Blues was filmed within view of Smith Rock. Partial filming for the 1997 feature The Postman took place on location, while it additionally appeared in Swordfish in following years. Several westerns have been filmed here, including the John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn film Rooster Cogburn. The Rockhard building at the park entrance was built as a movie set for this film, portrayed as "Kates Saloon".
Due to the uniqueness and fragile aspect of the park, park rangers enforce the animal leash law and strongly encourage all park users to stay on trails.
Note: Open fires prohibited at all times. There is a designated place for cooking with propane and white gas stoves. Cooking is not allowed anywhere else in the park. Gas lanterns are also prohibited. Smoking is only allowed in vehicles.
